Nohi Kids Retailer Spotlight : Green Genes

As I interview each store for this series, I consistently feel the pride and love for each of their cities. I LOVE working with these independent boutiques!

We just love the ladies over at Green Genes. They always give us compliments on each season that make us blush. Learn more about them and their store below!

What is the name and location and/or website of your store?
Green Genes is located at 5111 N. Clark St, Chicago, IL. 60640
also ;) Instagram: greengeneschi / Pinterest: Green Genes  / Facebook: Green Genes

How long have you been in business?
5.5 years

What do you love most about your city/street/location?
Our neighborhood of Andersonville is often described as "a quaint village in a big city." Clark St is essentially the "Main Street" throughout the neighborhood, with plenty of foot traffic to keep all the merchants busy. The neighborhood prides itself on having independent and locally owned business, and we love that we have a short walk for our job commute! Andersonville has started many eco-minded initiatives, of which Green Genes has been proud to be a part. And finally, the diversity of the neighborhood is by far, one of the best things; all ages, all races, and all kinds of families! We have built a loyal clientele over the years and we've loved watching those first little customers grow into 4 and 5 years olds, while we continue to meet new little ones every day.

What was it about Nohi Kids that first caught your attention and made you want to carry the line?
The colors and designs are what we noticed first. And when we learned it was made from organic cotton as well, there was no turning back!

What are your favorite styles and/or prints from our Fall 2013 line?
Really, we're supposed to choose?!  We're pretty smitten with the Forest Friends print as well as the color palette; the footie has done really well for us. But the stripes have also been a fantastic new addition for us...there's just something about itty bittys in vibrant stripes :)

What would you like to see from Nohi Kids in future seasons?
Just keep up the great work! We are grateful that you offer an abundance of gender-neutral items for the littles; it seems that so many folks are choosing to wait until the baby arrives to find out. Having a beautiful selection, like Nohi offers, makes it easier on the gift givers ;)

Have you received any customer feedback about Nohi Kids that you'd like to share?
It's always the same; great colors and designs and so scrumptiously soft!

Thanks, Green Genes!

Nohi Kids Retailer Spotlight - Grasshopper Boutique

We hear that Portland is the place to be.

Today, we're featuring one of our favorite retailers, Grasshopper Boutique! We've been selling to Grasshopper for years and love working with the girls there.

What is the name and location and/or website of your store?
grasshopper
1816 ne alberta st
portland, or 97211
www.grasshopperstore.com

How long have you been in business?
Almost 10 years.

What do you love most about your city/street/location?
I am a native Portland gal and I have to say what I love about our city is
they really shop local. I love my business neighbors and those that live
around the shop. I have watched so many kids grow up, go to their first day
of kindergarten, get new siblings, have birthdays...we take time to know our
customers.

What was it about Nohi Kids that first caught your attention and made you
want to carry the line?
I love the bold, modern (but still kid-like) prints, the soft cotton and the
quality...and Nohi always uses my favorite colors.

What are your favorite styles and/or prints from our Fall 2013 line?
I really like the screen print of the deer, its so hard to find great boys
clothes and this flew out the door for us. (yay!)
And it's no secret that I love stripes...and the magenta girl stripe made me
happy.

What would you like to see from Nohi Kids in future seasons?
Just keep up the good work and keep the good prints coming.

Have you received any customer feedback about Nohi Kids that you'd like to
share?
My customers love how soft it is...and one thing I really love is that I
have not had anyone return anything.  (great news, we love hearing that!)

Thanks, Grasshopper!

Nohi Kids Retailer Spotlight - Lollie

Learn more about another one of our great retailers, Lollie in Illinois!
Thanks, Alexis and Lollie!

What is the name and location and/or website of your store?
lollie
1312 Chicago Ave
Evanston, IL
www.lollieshop.com

How long have you been in business?
The store has been around for 10 years.  I took it over from the second
owners 3 years ago.

What do you love most about your city/street/location?
Evanston is such a great town for small businesses.  And we just adore our
customers - they are dedicated to shopping local and value the quality of
our products and the care we taking in selecting and testing everything we
carry.

What was it about Nohi Kids that first caught your attention and made
you want to carry the line?

We were looking to replace a knit line and Nohi Kids came across our
radar.  It was an easy sell given that the line is organic cotton and
bamboo.  At lollie, we do our best to source lines that are small, local
(or at lest domestic), organic and sophisticated enough for our young
clients.

What are your favorite styles and/or prints from our Fall 2013 line?
We're suckers for anything with birds and owls!

What would you like to see from Nohi Kids in future seasons?
Maybe some all over prints in the girls dresses and we receive requests
all of the time for larger sizes.

Have you received any customer feedback about Nohi Kids that you'd like
to share?

Nohi Kids is definitely a customer favorite at lollie.  The sizing does
seem to run a bit small and that is always an issue for us - a 7/8 seems
to be closer to a 6 and we have a lot of bigger girls who still love the
line, but have sadly outgrown it.

(**Thanks for the feedback - stay tuned for some bigger sizing in future seasons!**)

8 Tips To Get Your Kids To Eat Veggies!

Why do they make it so difficult?

No, you may not have buttered noodles for dinner...for the 4th time this week.
A spoonful of mayo? Choose again.  (True story...I knew a kid who loved mouthfuls of plain mayo...gross)

Just eat your vegetables. Please. Do it for both of us. Take one for the team. Don't make me sit on you and shovel these down your throat.

For those of you with a veggie-hater, here are some tips to make mealtime a little less annoying.

1) Let them grow their own mini garden. So many lessons wrapped into this one.

2) Let them help you cook.  They will feel proud and want to taste what they have created.

3) A little dip never hurt. Hummus? Homemade Ranch? Here is a recipe for a quick and easy homemade ranch dip made with Greek Yogurt:

Ingredients
  • ⅓ cup Greek Yogurt, plain, non-fat
  • 3 tbsp buttermilk
  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley
  • ⅛ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp garlic paste
  • 1 tsp vinegar
  • ⅛ tsp dill, or to taste
  • salt and pepper to taste
4) Make eating into a game. For example - how many peas can you eat before I count to 10?

5) Explain why veggies and fruits are good for our bodies and sugar and junk food is bad. They'll take it to heart more than you think.

6) Old fashioned bribery. You want to watch a show? Eat some baby carrots.

7) Make a green smoothie for dessert. Made with the right ingredients, green smoothies actually taste delicious. Find a quick and easy recipe here

8) Homemade veggie chips. As easy as one, two, three...really.

Any other tips that have worked in your house?

Flying with Baby!

I happen to be on a plane at the moment (yay technology!) and a poor baby has been screaming its adorable head off for about an hour. Personally, I don't mind...but, there are some people that are fired up about it.

Parents, weigh in....how do you deal with your screaming kids on the plane? Any tips?

A is most definitely for Afro.

I spend a lot of my day looking at design. Design that I love for my home, design that inspires me to create cute baby clothes for Nohi Kids, design that I want to wear....

Most recently, I have been collecting ideas for art and other eye-candy that I want to fill a baby's room. (Yes, I do have better things to do than start decorating a nursery, such as step one: get pregnant...but, I can't help myself)

Today  I stumbled across this that I love so much by DP Sullivan.

No, really. They are.

I am talking the softest, most scrumptious and cozy organic baby clothes ever.

Do you know that we created our fabric combination ourselves?
Start with a little organic cotton, throw in the softest bamboo, and then a touch of spandex to keep your baby's wardrobe fresh
(it's true--that spandex is why it holds up so well in the laundry!)

Add a baby to the softest organic baby clothes on the planet and this is what you get.

Old and wise.

I get it. We all loooove owls. We are just hootin' and hollerin' for these freaking things.

Give me an O! Give me a W!....okay, okay, you get the idea.

This love affair has been hot and heavy for years, and it's showing no signs of fizzling.
And, that makes this owl cheerleader very giddy.

This deep love means that I can keep making goodies for Nohi Kids that are covered with these little buggers because you all keep buying them! (And, thank you very much for that)

You can see our popular owl bodysuits here
and our matching owl blankets, here.

More people that I love have made babies (which I very much appreciate); and one almost-momma said that she is going to do the nursery in owls.

Well, of course you are. You and about 84,000 other owl-obsessed freaks...
But, great. I am thrilled. Fabulous choice. Adorable. YES YES YES to OWLS.

There are endless options out there for hoot-filled cuteness.

Under the Sea

I am weirdly obsessed with bathrooms.

Apparently when visiting other homes as a kid, the first place I had to check out was not the room that housed the Pound Puppies or Barbie's Dream House, but the potty?

What an odd child.

I do vividly remember being impressed with my grandmother's bathroom decor--not a seashell soap out of place, embroidered hand towels so perfectly hung that I'm certain that they had been freshly ironed...and, that vanity!
Oh my
.

I was mesmerized by the collection of lipsticks, perfumes, her signature pearl colored nail polish, the magnifying mirror... and, of course, all meticulously arranged and ready for the Vanity Hall of Fame.

Barbie, your house ain't got nothin' on my Mommom's.

Now, all grown up with my own home and bathroom, naturally this is where I want the decorating to begin. But, good LORD does prettifying a new home take much longer than you had anticipated!

In our defense, we've been slightly busy running some businesses, and planning a wedding! (not to worry, much more on that later...do not get me started on BHLDN.)

For now, the glorious bathroom....

We started with this piece of art disguised as a shower curtain, by Thomas Paul.

Then, that reminded me of how much I love this book and this book.

So, without getting too "theme-y" (at the request of the other person that shares my bathroom), I started my hunt. And, found this, this, this, these, these and this might come in handy since we just ripped our current hook out of the door.
love.

These are supposed to be little trinket dishes, but how cool would it be to create some kind of sea urchin wall art instead?

Artfully arranged on the back of the potty, of course.
No, we don't have any kids yet, why do you ask?
I promise I won't iron them.

Okay, fine. Maybe it's slightly theme-y.

We have one more little bathroom off of our laundry room appropriately named "The Poo Closet" because it's sole purpose is to hide the litter box.
But, watch out Gigi...your days as the only girl in the house with her own bathroom are numbered.

My dog is a total diva.

She acts like the very unobtrusive raindrops that gently touch her back are more like lightening bolts or razor blades falling from the sky.

But, aww....what a poor, wet, little baby. I understand. So, I bought her a vest. She needed it.

And, at least I didn't get her this one.

In her defense though, it has been pretty wet around here. So much so, that today we have a "local severe weather alert and urban stream flood advisory" for Oakland. And, this from the National Weather Service. So, don't laugh. It's super scary. (insert sarcasm from this East Coast girl.)

And, sadly my rain gear is not quite as stylish as my dog's.

Currently I am sporting an 8 year old ripped, big, orange jacket as my daily rain protection. I resemble either a pumpkin or a crossing guard and it's certainly time for an upgrade.

We can start here. Simple and hooded from Echo.

But, I really like this one. $196 (and on sale from $385!) for a rain coat? Of course that's the one I want. I have no idea where my dog's diva behavior comes from....

For kids, how about buying a pattern from Fabric Closet and some laminated fabric from Mimi's Fabrics and making your own?

Or, there are some seriously cute options from Viking Kids and Blue Peach

Your rain get-up is not complete without some rainboots. Check out these stylin' wellies from Funky Wellington Boots in the UK.

Mystery Baby Bumps.

If you know me, you know that I am obsessed with all things baby.

Baby clothes (organic baby clothes from Nohi Kids, of course) and baby shoes ( I am the #1 fan of Livie and Luca--you don't get cuter than these shoes).

Plus, baby fingers and baby yawns. Chunky baby wrists and dimpled baby buns. That little swirl of silky baby hair at the nape of the neck.....okay, you get the idea.

So, imagine my delight when, in the span of about 3 weeks, I find out that not one, but two, of my buddies are cooking up some babies for me! And, a bonus-- I get to be an aunt to one, so I am hardly containing my annoying, overzealous excitement.

Now, both of these goofballs are waiting to find out their baby's gender. They want to be surprised. Okay, fine. Whatever. But, can I at least find out? I would sleep better at night.

They are both in the midst of getting their gender neutral nurseries ready for the big surprise. So, naturally I am on the hunt for some ideas to inspire them.

Check out these blankets from Orangeberry Baby. Not really full-on nursery bedding, but some adorable prints to get the creative-but-gotta-stay-neutral juices flowing.

Or, how about some removable wall stickers from Kinky Wall. (they're not that kind of kinky, you dirty birds)

I bet it would be fun to have an Aunt Bucky. Afterall, she does make super cool tape deck bedding.

Other contenders are Olli and Lime, Dwell, and last but certainly not least our friend, Kukunest.

Ollie and Lime calls this "Charlie". I call it cute.

Fish and pebbles are for girls too.

Ok, it's not crib bedding. But what kid doesn't love a carnival?

And, one last thing. I saw this idea recently in my beloved Design Sponge.
Love it. I am saving this for my kid's room (that I would start creating now if I could. What can I say, I'm a planner?)
